Southern states depended on slaves to grow their heavily agricultural economy. These southern states thought Abraham Lincoln was going to get rid of slavery throughout the entire country. Southern states did not want this to happen since their economy depended on the more than 4 million slaves.

The Emancipation Proclamation was an announcement by Abraham Lincoln that set the slaves free in states that the Union were fighting against. All slaves were not immediately set free since many Southern states were still under control by the Confederates. States under control by the Confederates did not agree to the Emancipation Proclamation. Once the Union had control of a southern state, then those slaves in that state could be set free.
