Southerners who were determined to win back control of their states and put an end to these changes formed secret societies like the Klu Klux Klan. Wearing white sheets and hoods, members of this group rode through the countryside "spreading terror." They beat up black people to keep them in their place. They burned schools, churches and homes and even killed black people.

What is sharecropping
When the Confederacy surrendered, there money became worthless. So owners had no money to pay their workers and freedmen had no money to rent land. The problem was solved with sharecropping. The owners let the freedmen use some of their land, gave them seed, and lent them plows, tools, and mules to work with. In return, freedmen gave the owners a share of the crops they raised. Usually they split them half and half.

When was Congressional Reconstruction over and what happened to the South after it was over?
It ended in 1877 Over the next 20 years, black Americans in the South lost nearly every right they had won during Reconstruction. States started passing segregation laws, fair trials for blacks ended, and Southern states found a way to not allow black people to vote.
