Similarities include: Religion played a key role in each society. Each civilization built massive stone temples in its cities. In addition, each religion had many gods and sometimes required human sacrifices to appease these gods. In each religion, such sacrifices were needed to ensure that the world remained as it was. Differences include: The two civilizations worshipped different gods. Based on the information in the chapter, students may also conclude that Mayan nobles had stronger ties to the priesthood than did Aztec nobles, and that the Aztecs practiced human sacrifice on a larger scale than the Maya.

The Northwest had a mild climate with plentiful food supplies provided by rivers, large forests, and the ocean. "...the eastern Andes on one side....and the maritime cordillera on the other. Between them there is an extensive and very lofty plateau, 13,000 to 14,000 feet above the sea, with the lake called Titicaca....The surrounding mountains form a region of frost and snow. The hardly llamas and alpacas live and breed amidst the tufts of coarse grass....Besides the grass, there is a lowly shrub called tola, which can be used as firewood, Quinua belonging to the spinach family, can alone be raised at the higher elevations, yielding a small grain which, by itself, is insufficient to maintain human life."

Explain how the Andean people thrived in this harsh environment.

The Andean people built fishing villages along the coast of Peru and cultivated the river valleys on the highland plateaus. As population grew, they farmed terraces cut into the sides of mountains. They grew corn, many types of potatoes, and other vegetables. They also raised hardy llamas and alpacas. They traded extra crops and wool for products from nearby groups.
