The narrator lives with an old man with whom he has no problems. However, he becomes fixated on the old man's "vulture-like" eye, which he finds repulsive.

Over several nights, the narrator sneaks into the old man's bedroom and watches him sleep. On the eighth night, the narrator's fear and obsession with the old man's eye drive him to commit murder. After killing the old man, the narrator dismembers the body and hides it under the floorboards.

The police come to investigate after neighbors hear a shriek, and the narrator becomes increasingly paranoid, thinking that the police can hear the old man's heart beating beneath the floorboards. The narrator finally confesses to the murder, revealing his insanity to the reader.
