What's the matter?
Mixture it up!
This is the only solution!
Separate me!
Water? Liquid or Solid.
100
What are the three states of matter?
Liquid, gas, and solid.
100
What is a mixture?
Mixture is when particles of one substance gets mixed with those of another substance.
100
What is a solution?
Solution is when one substance dissolves in another.
100
How can you separate iron filing from rice? Explain!
By using a magnet. It attracts all of the iron filings.
100
What is Cohesion?
When water molecules (Hydrogen and Oxygen) are strongly attracted to each other.
200
When solids reach their melting point, they become what?
Liquids!
200
Give an example of two solids in a mixture.
Chocolates & Gummies. Rocks and Shells.
200
What type of mixture are solutions? explain.
Solutions are homogenous because they are dissolved into eachother, and cannot be separated.
200
The separation technique that involves heating a solution until the liquid changes into a gaseous state, leaving behind a solid is known as...
Evaporation!
200
Why does surface tension happen?
Because of cohesion. The molecule on the surface of the water only connect to the molecules next to them, creating surface tension.
300
What substance can go through all three states?
Water!
300
Give a mixture example of a liquid and a solid.
Sand & Water etc.
300
Give an example of a solution that you drink! (except lemonade)
Coco-cola!
300
When one substance is dissolved into another, which methods will you NOT use to separate?
Decanting. Magnets.
300
What is water made out of?
Hydron and Oxygen. H2O
400
Which state(s) of matter takes the shape of the container they are in?
Gas and Liquid
400
What type of mixture is a bowl of Lays chips and chocolate chip cookies? Explain.
Heterogenous. Because they are unevenly mixed and can be separated.
400
In ocean water, which is the solute, and which is the solvent?
Solute is the salt, and Solvent is the water.
400
How can you separate baking powder from water?
Filtering!
400
Sometimes, when I add 4 cups of sugar to my water, some of it doesn't get dissolved. Why?
Because of saturation! The solid is dissolved in water until no more can be dissolved.
500
What is Chemistry? Mention everything!
Chemistry is the study of matter and how it changes. It is also the study of how matter react to each other.
500
Give an example of a solid and gas mixture?
Sandstorms!
500
Can solution ever be separated? explain!
Yes! for example, salt and water, they can be separated through evaporation.
500
How can you separate salt from a mixture of salt and sand? Mention the process step by step.
First you need to put the mixture into water and dissolve the salt. Then using the process of decanting, remove the water from the cup, leaving the sand behind. Afterwards, use the method of evaporation to get the salt back!
500
Put these three in order from more dense (heavier) to least dense. Oil, Water, Alcohol.
Water has the most density, and alcohol has the least.
