How do we line up at the door
Quietly and hands to ourselves. We do not open the door until the bell rings.
Are you allowed to eat in class?
No, unless I give you a treat.
When I am teaching, our voices are at what level?
Zero - unless we are having a classroom discussion! If they are not, we begin working through the flowchart.
What items are not allowed in class?
Food, drinks (waterbottles allowed), cellphones

Before class

Is getting a drink of water from the fountain typically permitted during class?
No. This should be done during break/before class or you can pair it with a bathroom break.
Bring your waterbottle to class. Waterbottles should be filled prior to class.
If you want to have a conversation about English with Ms. Rao before or after class, where should you do that?
Find her in the staffroom or when she is on yard duty.

Attend afterschool Homework Club on Thursdays in F-Block.
What do you do when the teacher, or a student that is called on, is speaking?
Pay attention to the speaker and be active listeners using a voice level 0 (STAR).

What happens if you have to fill out a "Reflection Form" after a Purple Slip?
You fill it out thoroughly and honestly.
We will have a meeting about what happened and repair our relationship before our next class.

When do students get sent outside to reflect?
When students are disruptive, etc., usually after two warnings.
What should you use to write with on classwork?
A pencil or a pen. We DO NOT use markers, colored pencils, or crayons to write with.
When the bell rings, where should you be?
In your seat working on the do-now/fluency task.
What do you do if you need a tissue?
Get up quietly from your seat and get a tissue from either the front or the back of the room. Sit back down promptly.
If there are no tissues, tell Ms. Rao or another adult in the room. If directed, get tissues from the staffroom.
How do you enter the classroom?
Two straight lines at the door.
Walk quietly to your seat, follow directions and start your fluency practice or do-now task
What day of the week will you need your laptop for English?
Trick question. Never. Unless you are asked to bring it in advance or you have an agreement with Ms. Rao
How do you show that you have an answer or comment in class?

I have rules about what is permitted and not permitted in my class. Why so many rules?
To prevent disruptions to our learning. Quality education is a basic human right - we should all do our part to ensure that our classmates get to do their best learning in the classroom.

Raise my hand, wait quietly in my chair for Ms. Rao.
Work on any feedback I receive for the work
Work on an extension task/finish previous incomplete tasks
Pick up 5 pieces of rubbish to bin (as stealthily as possible!)
What is the one rule that applies to all of aspects of class: entering class, during class and dismissal?
Use kind words, gestures and language to EVERYONE. Keep your hands, feet and objects to YOURSELF.
What should you do if you need extra time to complete your homework or an assignment?
In-person:
Find Ms. Rao after-class and explain my situation BEFORE THE TASK IS DUE. Fix a date when I will submit my work.
After-school:
Email Ms. Rao using Compass, explain my situation and fix a date to submit my work. Check my email again within 24 hours to read Ms. Rao's response.
What are the four things you need for class every day?
A pen; a pencil (+ eraser); English Notebook; all booklets used during the unit
What happens if your assignment is missing for more than 5 school days?
If you have not arranged for an alternate due date with Ms. Rao, your parents will be emailed.
If this is a pattern or you have not made any effort to speak with Ms. Rao about your task, you will be put on 'Academic Risk' and will need to speak with the Coordinators and Ms. Rao to catch-up.
Where should we keep our hands and feet?
To ourselves!
I ask you to 'pack-up'. What do you do?
Gather materials, clean up around your table, push your chair in and stand behind your chair. Wait for Ms. Rao to dismiss the class.
What behaviors will be considered an immediate purple slip without any warnings given?
Not keeping hands/feet/objects to self. Using unkind or inappropriate language or gestures. Demonstrating unsafe behaviors.
