Are you allowed to bring your own pencil cases to school in Grade 5/6? Why or why not?

No! It causes too many problems and we have plenty of great stationary in the classroom!

It is lunch or recess eating time and your teacher has given the class the instruction to go outside. You see some rubbish on the floor that is not yours. What do you do?

Take mutual responsibility and put it in the bin on your way out.

There should be three things at the top of a new page in your book. What are those three things?

1. Today's date.

2. The learning intention.

3. The success criteria.

It is a Monday morning assembly at the end of Term 1. You have walked into the hall and sat down with your friends you normally sit with. A couple of them are being a bit silly and distracted this particular day. What do you do?

Two options:

1. You ignore them and eventually they get the hint and be quiet.

2. Even though it might be a bit embarrassing, you get up and move to a different spot. You know they won't be quiet, even if you ignore them.

You didn't understand the teacher instructions for a task. What do you do?

Re-read any information you have been given, instruction sheet or anything on the screen. If you still don't understand, ask a classmate. If they are not able to clearly explain it to you, check-in with your teacher.

In Junior School, the rule was "Ask 3 before me" and although we don't have that exact rule now, you need to ask a couple of classmates the instructions before going to the teacher.

You need to use some sticky tape or the stapler, which are kept on the teacher's desk. What do you do?

You ask the teacher for permission to use the materials.

200

For the first time, your teacher has allowed you to go to the bathroom with a partner. However the friend you go with is messing around and taking their time. What do you do?

Let them know that you are going back upstairs to class and return without them.

200

Situation: your teacher tells the class to put a piece of paper into your Reading/Lettura book. You a) glue it into a random page in the book, b) shove it into a random page (no glue) or c) cut around the edges and glue it into the next page of your book.

Answer = c. You are in Grade 5/6 - this is the expectation now!

200

Your class is walking to the library and the teacher has their back to the group. Your friends are getting silly and rowdy. What do you do?

Tell them to chill out/calm down and if they don't listen, move away from them and walk with someone else.

It is Term 2 and homework has started. There will always be some options of homework tasks. How do you choose your homework for the week? a) Always go for the hardest option, even if it's going to be too difficult to complete, b) choose the easy option because you have a lot of after school activities, or c) challenge yourself to choose the harder option sometimes but if you know you're very busy one week, it's ok to not always choose the harder option.

Answer = c.

In Grade 5/6, you are expected to become more independent with your learning. Your teachers are obviously here to support you, and want to! However you also need to show increased independence and responsibility for your learning.

Situation: you find a pencil, pen or glue stick that has run out or is no longer usable. What do you do?

Put it in the Stationary Recycling box/rubbish bin.

300

Situation: You have been assigned a classroom job that you don't really enjoy. Do you a) throw a hissy fit and demand that the teacher changes your job, b) give it a go - maybe it's not as bad as you remember or c) suck it up and deal with it for a few weeks until jobs are next changed?

Answer = b or c.

If it is REALLY bothering you after a week or two, you could let your teacher know.

300

You realise you missed a page when completing your last Matematica task. What do you do? a) Stress out! Your teacher is SO strict with these things and they will be so mad, b) Forget about it and just continue on with your book. It was a harmless mistake or c) For the next Maths task, use the page you missed. It was a simple mistake but you can still fill that page.

Answer = c.

300

Situation: there is a CRT in your classroom and people are not behaving well and it is affecting the class's learning. What should you do?

Tell your classmates to calm down and try to ignore them. Take responsibility for your own learning.If you think it is a good idea, let your teacher know when they get back to school.

300

The task for today is really difficult and you don't think you'll be able to complete it without your best friend's help. What do you do?

Try on your own first. One strategy to get out of the Learning Pit is to ask someone else/ a classmate or friend. Give the task a go and then if you need support, look for it after you've tried.

400

Situation: you find a piece of used paper in the scrap paper box. Do you a) Ask the class who put it there, b) Put it in the recycling bin or c) put it back in the scrap paper box?

Answer = b

You have been given the opportunity to sit next to a friend in the seating plan created by the teacher. However, you know that you do not work well together. What do you do?

You decide whether you should give it one chance to see if you work well together but when you feel you get distracted for the first time, you privately let your teacher know that it is not a good idea for you to be sitting together.

Situation: It is a reset session after lunch in Term 2. You remember that your teacher's look at all your exercise books while they are writing your reports. You are pretty sure a couple of yours are a mess and want to make sure your teacher doesn't miss anything. What do you do?

As it is a reset session, instead of reading or drawing, you take a look at a couple of your books and see if you can organise them a bit better.

Bonus point: ask the teacher for a sticky note if it is extra disorganised and write a couple of notes that will help the teacher to understand!

400

You have been given the opportunity to work on a project in a group, and you can choose your own groups. What 2 things do you consider before choosing who to work with?

1. How well you can work as a team - will there be arguments, etc.

2. How productive you will be with the team - will these people distract you or help you to focus.

400

Situation: your class is watching a BTN video for Unit of Work and your teacher hasn't specifically indicated you need to take notes on what you are watching. Explain what you would do while watching the video.

Take some notes anyway. Just because the teacher hasn't indicated that you need to take notes, doesn't mean it won't help you remember the information. Take the initiative yourself and do some note-taking.
