Metacarpals

Humerus
Humerus – The upper arm bone.
Foramina
Foramina – Openings in bones that allow nerves and blood vessels to enter or leave the bone.
Fontanels
Fontanels – “Soft spots” in the infant skull made of membrane and cartilage; allow enlargement of the skull and become solid bone by about 18 months.
Fibula
Fibula – The slender, smaller bone of the lower leg that attaches to the proximal end of the tibia.
Femur
Femur – The upper leg bone (thigh).
Epiphysis
Epiphysis – Each of the two extremities (ends) of a long bone.
Endosteum
Endosteum – The membrane that lines the medullary canal, keeps yellow marrow intact, and produces some bone growth.
Diaphysis
Diaphysis – The long shaft of a long bone.
Cranium
Cranium – The spherical structure that surrounds and protects the brain; made of eight bones.
Clavicles
Clavicles – The collarbones, attached to the manubrium of the sternum by ligaments.
Carpals
Carpals – The wrist bones.
Patella
Patella – The kneecap.
Periosteum
Periosteum – A tough membrane covering the outside of bone that contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, and osteoblasts; necessary for bone growth, repair, and nutrition.
Phalanges
Phalanges – The bones of the fingers and toes (3 in each finger, 2 in each thumb; 3 in each toe except the great toe which has 2).
Radius
Radius – The lower arm bone on the thumb side that rotates around the ulna to allow the hand to turn freely.
Ribs
Ribs – The 12 pairs of bones that attach to the thoracic vertebrae; form part of the protective thoracic cage.
Scapulas
Scapulas – The shoulder bones, which provide attachment for the upper arm bones.
Sinuses
Sinuses – Air spaces in the bones of the skull that act as resonating chambers for the voice and are lined with mucous membranes.
Sternum
Sternum – The breastbone, consisting of the manubrium, gladiolus, and xiphoid process.
Tarsals
Tarsals – The ankle bones.
Vertebrae
Vertebrae – The 26 bones of the spinal column that protect the spinal cord and provide support.
