Because nothing like it had ever been made before. It was the first of its kind and most people outside the US didn't think it'd work.
Why didn't the Founding Fathers want our presidents to be elected by staright majority and what did they make to manage the elections instead?
They were scared that if the president was elected by pure majority the majority would be able to control everything. They called this the "tyranny of the majority". They set up the Electoral College to stop that from happening.
