Your setter is in Position 1, your middle is in Position 6, and your outside hitter is in Position 5. Your team wins the rally while receiving serve. Who rotates into Position 1 and serves next?
The player who was in Position 2 rotates into Position 1 and becomes the next server.
A player is having a panic attic on the court during play. When the rally is over what do you do?
Option 1: Immediate Substitution (Recommended)
Option 2: Support and Evaluate
Option 3: Team Management
The other team has its strongest hitters in the front row. What serving strategy can disrupt their offense?
Serve short to bring a front-row attacker forward.
Target a passer who limits the setter's options.
Avoid predictable serving patterns.
You substitute a player, and she immediately looks upset, shakes her head, and refuses to make eye contact with you. What do you do?
What a strong answer should include:
Your team is down 5-1 early in the first set. Players look frustrated and communication has stopped. Whats your next move?
You finish the first set and realize your strongest hitter is consistently rotating into the front row at the same time as your second-best hitter, leaving one rotation with very limited offense. What can you do?
Your libero is in tears after struggling early in the match but wants to stay on the court. What should you do?
A team has is running two liberos and both of them are going it for middles, and they both serve but only for middle 1 not middle two. Is this legal?
Here's how it works:
A team can designate two liberos for a set.
Only one libero can be on the court at a time.
Both liberos can serve, but they must serve for the same rotational position.
For example, both liberos can serve for Middle 1, but neither can serve for Middle 2
Your starting middle is running late to warmups with no notice. She shows up right before lineups are due. What do you do?
Follow your established team policy.
Start a different player and bring her in later.
Have a quick conversation before making a decision.
Adjust the lineup to prioritize the team.
After a difficult match, you walk into the restroom and overhear two players criticizing a teammate. The comments are personal and disrespectful. The players do not realize you heard the conversation. What's your next move?
- Address it Immediately and privately
- Address the team culture without identifying the individuals at the next team meeting
-Gather more context before acting
You can only change one thing:
Which do you prioritize and why?
There isn't one correct answer.
A strong coach should answer "it depends on what is currently costing us the most points."
A player has a nose bleed on the court during the game? Some of the blood got on the players jersey. What is your next steps once this is made now to the team.
The priority is athlete safety and managing the blood issue quickly and calmly. The score, rotation, and lineup are secondary. Great coaches handle situations like this efficiently so the athlete feels supported and the team remains focused on the match.
Wrong server serve the ball, we win the point, coach realizes and puts the right serve to serve and win the next point and the score table realized after winning the second serve with the right serve. What is your next steps if they try to protest?
serving-order faults are only corrected back to the last point where the fault can legally be addressed. Once subsequent play has occurred, not all previous points are necessarily removed.
After a tough loss, a player asks in front of the team:
"Coach, why didn't I play?"
How should you respond?
Don't answer the playing time question in front of the team, instead, respectfully acknowledge the players question and move the conversation to a private setting
EX: "That's a fair question, and I'd like to give you a complete answer. Let's talk one-on-one after we've had a chance to address the team"
Immediately after the match, a parent approaches you and starts questioning your lineup decisions while players are standing nearby. What's your next move?
- Protect athletes from the discussion
-Remind the parents of the clubs communication policy
-offer to schedule a meeting after the tournament has concluded
