The Cuban Missile Crisis: A confrontation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, after the Soviets secretly placed nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. 

The U.S. discovered the missile, and it was ultimately resolved when the Soviets agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for a U.S. promise not to invade Cuba.
