What is the Common Application? aka the Common App
An application students can submit to multiple colleges instead of filling out a college application for each one.

What is a major? What is a minor?
Major- A subject that a college student will choose to make their main focus; they will spend the majority of their time learning about this, and it is likely related to the field they want to work in as a career. Minor- A subject area that a student is interested in and passionate about; they take multiple classes in the subject but it is not their main area of study.

How much does it cost to go to college?
The actual cost of a college education can vary greatly. Many times, the price of tuition is not actually what a student will pay because they may receive scholarships and financial aid.

How many people normally live in a dorm room?
Most dorm rooms will have two students in them. However, there are dorms for only one person or for three or four people.

Where is Hamline University located?
Hamline is located between downtown Saint Paul and downtown Minneapolis, near the state fairgrounds.

When do you apply for college?
Early Fall of your senior year in high school, up to late winter.

Do you have to pick a major right away when you begin college?
At a small liberal arts institution, you typically have until the end of your sophomore year of college to formally declare your major.

What is the FAFSA and when do I complete it?
The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. For seniors, it can be completed any time after January 1st of your senior year.

Why would someone live on campus?
A student may choose to live on campus because they want to live at the school they attend so they can be close to classes, professors' offices and other resources. Many students want to live on campus because of the positive experience they receive by being close to friends they make in college. Studies show that students who live on campus tend to have a higher GPA than those who live off campus.

The date by which you are required to tell a school if you will be attending or not (May 1st).

What is an academic adviser?
At Hamline, a professor in your major department who assists you in choosing classes, finding research and internship opportunities, choosing a career path or a graduate program.

How do I apply for scholarships?
There are many websites students can search to find scholarships to help with the cost of a college education, but some scholarships can be directly awarded by the college a student attends.

What kinds of clubs might a college or university have for its students?
Most schools have a student government and a variety of sports clubs. Other options include clubs for students who enjoy volunteering, outdoor activities, hobbies such as knitting, drawing or dancing, or clubs for students who are passionate about taking care of the environment.

What is the minimum ACT and GPA we accept?
Hamline does not have a set minimum ACT/SAT score or GPA. Instead, the admission staff looks at a prospective student's application holistically and makes a decision based on the entire application.

What are the materials you usually need to complete an application?
An official high school transcript, standardized test scores (ACT or SAT), letters of recommendation, application, and essay.

What is the difference between public and private?
Public institutions are mostly funded by the state in which they are located and tend to cost less, while private institutions are funded by donations and endowments and can cost more, but may offer significant financial aid packages.

What is work study and what does it have to do with financial aid?
Work study is the option for a student to have a job on campus at their college. They can work in many different offices and gain networking and job experience within their school. Work study is need based and can be included in a student's financial aid package if they qualify.

What is the difference between a varsity and intramural sport?
A varsity sport will have a coaching staff, regular practices and will compete against other schools in its conference. Intramural sports tend to be more informal and can have games between other intramural teams at the same institution as well as between schools.

What is the difference between an "early action" deadline and "early decision?"
Early Action- A non-binding application to a school submitted in the fall of your senior year of high school. Early Decision- a binding application submitted in the fall of your senior year which means you agree to attend that school if you are accepted.

What does liberal arts mean?
A liberal arts institution will require its students to take classes outside of their major in order to get a more well-rounded education.

What are two types of aid to help you pay for college?
Scholarships, Grants, and loans. Scholarships through the college or outside scholarships, state/federal/college grants and loans (federal, private, etc).

What is the difference between a religious-based college and a non-religious based college?
Although there are varying degrees of religious affiliation in colleges, a religious-based school will likely require its students to take religion classes and possibly attend regular activities like chapel. A non-religious based school will leave religious involvement up to its students.
