Crack! Thunder struck and rain poured. Max stared blankly out the window, trying to contain his emotions that raged like the weather. He was beginning to lose it. Dropping the kite from his hand, Max broke out into full sobs. His mother comforted him, “There, there, Max. We’ll just find something else to do.” She began to unpack the picnic basket that was on the counter and offered him a sandwich. Max snapped, “I don’t wanna sand-mich!” A flash from the sky lit up the living room. Boom! Mom sighed.

Why is Max upset?

They will not go to the picnic nor will he fly his kite.

Bryant almost dropped his magic books as he got off the bus in front of the old theater. Surprised to see that nobody else was there, he checked the address he had written down. He looked up to see that he was, in fact, at the Star Theater, and that the signread “The Great Hypno” in extremely small letters. He was in the right place.

Walking into the theater, he was greeted by a life-sized picture of The Great Hypno. It was covered in dust and faded by the sun. It was probably as old as the book he had read about the magician. The curtain rose and The Great Hypno hobbled out to the middle of the stage. Bryant looked around. He was baffled. How could the show be starting if I am the only person in the audience?

“My first trick is my greatest trick,” The Great Hypno rasped

“I will hypnotize the entire audience.” Coughing, he looked directly at Bryant.

Bryant was uncomfortable. He didn’t know what to think about the withered, gray man on the stage, so he played along.

Based on the story, which of these is true about The Great Hypno?

A. He is older and less popular than Bryant expects him to be.

B. He has only recently begun performing at the Star Theater.

C. He is an important figure in the history of stage magic.

D. He is a great magician who performs many incredible tricks.

Shot up from the ground,

With its arms spread wide.

Exposed to the world,

It had plenty to hide.

It looked upon the decades passed,

Watching grass become sand

And sand become grass.

Deep in its core, it held many things.

The history of the world

Is recorded in its rings.

Its feet still stand,

Unmoved by strength and blade.

Body gone, its memory will not fade.

What can you infer the poem is about?

A tree

One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one’s cheeks burned with my unwillingness to spend money that such close dealing implied. Three times Della counted it.

How did Della get her money?

Bargaining with tradesmen

And sixty cents of it was in pennies.  Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one’s cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied. Three times Della counted it.

One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. Which instigates the moral reflection that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating.
