On behalf of the state of New York, NYSERDA holds title to the Western New York Nuclear Service Center, a 3,300-acre parcel near West Valley, approximately 35 miles south of Buffalo. The nation’s only commercial spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant operated at this site from 1966 to 1972 before Congress passed legislation in this year which began the federal/state cleanup project that continues today.
