What does it mean to conserve?
To save
Many people like to grow flowers and vegetables in their own gardens. They may also want to help the planet by conserving water. How can people both enjoy their gardens and lower their water use? One way is to water plants close to their roots, where water is needed. Another way is to recycle water used indoors. For example, people can water plants with leftover water from cooking. Yet another way is to choose plants that don't need much water to grow. These are just some of the many ways that the home gardener can conserve water.
There are many things people can do to cut back water use in their gardens.

Black widow spiders are far more dangerous to animals than they are to people. The spiders catch beetles, flies, and other insects in their webs and wrap them in silk. Then, they suck the insects out and eat them. Female black widows sometimes even kill and eat their mates! People, on the other hand, are usually safe from black widows. The spiders only bite to defend themselves. A person who is bitten by a black widow may experience aches or upset stomachs. However, it is rare for a person bitten by a black widow to die.
Black widows are more of a threat to insects than humans.

A female kangaroo has a special fold of skin that forms a pouch. When a baby kangaroo, or joey, is born, it climbs into its mother's pouch. At birth, a joey is only about one inch in length. It needs to stay in the pouch so it can develop more. After several months, the joey has grown enough to leave the pouch for short periods. Between seven and ten months of age, it is ready to leave the pouch for good.
A baby kangaroo stays in his mother's pouch until he is strong enough to be on his own.

Earth is much more welcoming to life than Mars is. Earth's thick atmosphere helps keep the planet warm, with an average temperature of 57°F. In addition, over two-thirds of Earth is covered by water. These conditions make it easy for all kinds of organisms to live here. Mars, on the other hand, has a thin atmosphere and is farther from the sun. Therefore, it is much colder. Mars's average temperature is about -60°F! In addition, the surface of the planet is mostly dry and dusty. Without enough water and warmth, most organisms would struggle to survive on Mars.
Earth is better able to support life than Mars.

When people think of Antarctica, they think of snow and ice. When they think of deserts, they think of sun, heat, and sand. Yet in spite of its cold temperatures, Antarctica is actually a desert. In fact, it is the largest desert on the planet. A desert is a very dry environment that receives less than ten inches of precipitation yearly. On average, Antarctica gets less than two inches. Most of that precipitation is in the form of snow, but rain or ice can sometimes fall as well.
Even though Antarctica is cold and has snow, it is still a desert.
