Being at the camps affected Elie’s position towards the Nazis because he knew what they were capable of and the other townspeople did not. Therefore, he will not forgive them, since they killed most of his family and scarred him for life.

When his father died, Elie felt the way he had vowed not to; liberated. In a way, he felt happy, because it made him not have to worry about his father’s well-being or take care of him any longer.
