One of the biggest and most well known "splits" in church history was when Martin Luther challenged the Roman Catholic church to reform and launched the Protestant Reformation when he posted his 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Cathedral. The "Protestants" then split again several times throughout church history. The Presbyterian church formed based on the teachings and leadership of this man, who wrote a book, "Institutes of the Christian Religion" based on his thoughts about Luther's writings.
