Anything Goes!
100
Name the 4 main functions of connective tissue.
What are binding & support, protection, insulation and transportation?
100
This type of CT is important in fighting bacterial invasions and has the appearance of loose fibers and cells within a space, or gel-like, material.
What is reticular CT (a form of loose CT)?
100
This type of cartilage is the most abundant in the body and is found in places like the trachea and the ribs.
What is hyaline cartilage?
100
These cells produce the organic portion of the matrix and then bone salts are deposited on and between the fibers.
What are osteocytes?
100
I support body parts like the knee and have a tremendous cushioning ability. What type of cartilage am I?
What is fibrocartilage?
200
The 4 main types of connective tissue are...
What are CT proper, cartilage, bone and blood?
200
This CT appears to look like air bubbles and aids in insulation and nutrient storage.
What is adipose CT (loose CT)?
200
This cartilage type is wavy in appearance and absorbs shock well in places like the knee and spine.
What is fibrocartilage?
200
Bone tissue is not very well vascularized and resembles air bubbles when viewed microscopically. True or False?
FALSE! Bone tissue IS very well vascularized and resembles the rings found on a tree that has been cut down.
200
Collagen is found to white naturally in color, while elastic tissue is yellow. Why do these tissues appear pink and purple when viewed microscopically?
The stain used for slide mount purposes creates this hue. The features of each tissue fiber would otherwise be hard to see.
300
This substance allows connective tissue to bear weight, withstand great tension and experience physical trauma and abrasion.
What is extracellular matrix?
300
This CT are fine fibers that support cells that fight infection and have a grape-like appearance.
What is reticular CT (loose CT)?
300
Found in the ear and epiglottis, this type of cartilage is more closely "packed" in microscopic appearance than the more abundant hyaline type.
What is elastic cartilage?
300
The major function of this connective tissue is to transport nutrients and other substances throughout the body.
What is blood?
300
Name 3 common characteristics of CT and discuss what each mean.
1. Common origin - all CT originates from mesenchyme 2. Degrees of vascularity - Cartilage is avascular while bone is very vascular 3. Extracellular matrix - ground substance+fibers
400
Name the 3 types of fibers found in connective tissue, their appearance and what they are known for.
Collagen - glistening white rope - strength (like steel) Elastic - yellow rubber band - stretchability Reticular - small grapes - superficial, support
400
The fibers in this type of CT are closely packed, wavy in appearance and can withstand great resistance and tension.
What is dense regular CT (dense CT)?
400
These cells are found in cartilage and are generally found in small groups or cavities called lacunae.
What are chondrocytes?
400
1. These type of cells make up the majority of blood and carry oxygen. 2. What are the other type of cells that are present in blood?
1. What are red blood cells? 2. What are white blood cells?
400
How do extracellular matrix and ground substance relate to each other?
Ground substance is the interstitial fluid, proteins and proteoglycans, while the extracellular matrix is the ground substance AND the fibers. Both allow for a great deal of cushion and connectivity.
500
Name the 4 types of connective tissue cells and which type of CT each create.
What are: Fibroblasts - CT proper (dense & irregular) Chondroblasts - cartilage Osteoblasts - bone Hematopoietic stem - blood
500
What type of CT does the aorta have? Why is this type important to this structure?
What is elastic CT (dense CT)? This type is important because of the stress and strain the aorta undergoes. It pumps blood continually and must "spring back" into place.
500
Why does cartilage generally have a long healing time?
Cartilage is avascular and as the cells age, they lose their ability to divide which causes the healing process to occur slowly.
500
Why is this type of CT considered "connective"?
It develops from mesenchyme and consists of blood cells. These cells are surrounded by a nonliving fluid matrix called blood plasma. The fibers of blood are soluble protein molecules that form "fibers" when clotting.

What is the difference between brown and white fat? Which kind do babies have?
White fat is what adults have more of which allows for necessary nutrient storage. Brown fat is what babies need to properly heat their bodies. They do not have the ability to shiver and need their blood supply heated.
