What is the difference between "best before" date and expiry date?

Best before date:  Used for prepacked food with a shelf life of 90 days or less. Foods can be used after this date, but many lose some of their freshness. Best before dates are not indicators of food safety, either before or after the date. They apply to unopened products only. Once opened the shelf life of food may change. As with all food, if in doubt throw out. Expiry date: Do not use the food after the date as it is considered unsafe to eat. There are very few foods which have an expiry date. In Canada it is legal to sell after bbd. In Canada it is illegal to sell after expiration date.
