Can staff contact students outside of CPC?

NO! If a student messages staff using social media, staff MUST REPORT TO CPC OFFICE.

What does it mean to be mobile around the classroom?

  • You should always be attentive with what your students are doing

  • Should be aware of what is going on in the room

  • Once you know the students, it is very easy to spot when they are acting suspicious or different from usual

  • Stop check homework

  • Always offer/ask if they need help

  • Give encouragement and compliments

  • Building relationships with small talk

  • Keeping students on task


  • This means that you should not be:

    • Sitting down and on your phone for an extended period for self entertainment

    • Looking out the window staring off into the distance

    • Talking to coworker regarding things unrelated to work

When are appropriate times for students to use the bathroom?

When they arrive in the classroom, before and after meal time, lessons, and activities, and before dismissal. They should try not to go during lessons/activities unless it's an emergency. During arrival students may not go to the bathroom until 2:40 PM (unless it's an emergency).

What should students do during arrival?

Walk to their group, wait in line to get their temperature/health check, go to their assigned seats, start homework.

Please also teach your students should say "excuse me" and WAIT instead of pushing/jumping over students.

How should snacks be distributed? 

Staff should do a call and response to get students' attention then ask about snack, do a head count, then distribute snack accordingly.

Where should staff leave their belongings (i.e. backpacks, bags, jackets, etc.)?

Staff belongings MUST BE KEPT in the CPC office, they should not be brought into the classrooms. (Coats and jackets are exceptions.)

What are some things that need to be prepped BEFORE you go into the classroom?

CPC First Aid kits, sharpen pencils, paper towels, garbage bags, soap, hand sanitizer, worksheets, lesson materials, etc.

During student arrival, what do staff need to check for?

Staff need to take students' temperature, do a health check, do a headcount, if you see students running, send them back and have them walk properly, etc.

What should snack time look and sound like? 

*Bonus Question: What should students do with the garbage and milk?

Snack time should be quiet with sneeze guards up. 

*Bonus: Food should be thrown away into garbage bins and milk poured into sink properly (not splatter everywhere). 

If garbage bins are full, tie them up and place them outside of the classroom then reline the bin with a new garbage bag.

Where should teachers be positioned during gym/yard?

*Bonus Question: Can teachers play with the students?

Teachers should be able to see all the students easily at all times so they should always be moving on the outside area of where the students are playing.

*Bonus: Yes but only 1 teacher may play at a time while the other is watching the students.

Can staff use their phones during work hours?

Yes they may use it during homework help. Reminder: Phone use strictly for professional use (i.e. to contact office if walkie is not working).

What are some things staff should do to keep their items organized?

*Bonus Question: Why should staff organize their items and know where everything is?

Label EVERYTHING, have a set routine for the day (weekly schedule), preparation for lessons and activities should be done ahead of time (at least a day in advance), know where you put your things i.e. clipboard in cubby, first aid kit inside group storage cabinet.

*Bonus: Staff should be organized and know where everything is so it doesn't get mixed up with other groups' items and in case their class is being subbed, the sub will know what is going on.

When entering a classroom, what should staff make sure there is enough of and what should they look out for in terms of safety?

If there is enough tables and seats for all students, make sure the class is safe and there are not hazards (i.e. a spill or sharp objects on the ground).

What does dismissal look like and where should groups be when inside and outside the building?

Arrive in the auditorium on time (G1-2 be there by 5:10, G3-5 be there by 5:20), groups will line up and go outside with latest number first (G2 then G1, G5A/B then G4A/B then G3). Groups will be against the fence and wait for parents to walk up to staff to sign their student out.

What should teachers be doing during homework help?

Both teachers should be walking around the room to help students, they should make sure students are quiet, giving students reminders about how much time they have left, and spot check homework in a quick and efficient way.

Can students use their own devices?

  • Students cannot take out nor use their own phones

  • Students can take out their own tablets out for nyas and hw (only if hw specifically asked for it)

  • For the groups that want to use ipads as an incentive - talk to office

How should staff act in the classroom?

Use appropriate language, treating everyone with respect, being a good model in front of your students (acting kind, friendly, fair, encouraging, and supportive)

What do groups need to do during gym/yard time?

Going over safety rules first, stretching, designated areas for students to play, take turns if there are multiple groups in the yard at the same time, have an effective call and response, etc.

Reminder: prioritize homework and activities FIRST. No yard after 4:30 PM.

What should you have students do BEFORE dismissal?

*Bonus Question: When should you start preparing the class for dismissal?

Pack up their things and make sure they have everything, going to the bathroom, check and clean the room (i.e. throwing out any garbage), line up etc.

*Bonus: At least 15-20 minutes before your dismissal time.

What does the fire drill process look like from beginning to end?

*Bonus question: What happens if a student is in the bathroom when the fire alarm goes off?

Once the fire alarm rings, teachers should instruct students to stop what they are doing and line up quietly into 2 straight lines. One teacher in the front of the line should be leading students out of the classroom and outside of the primary exit. The teacher in the back of the line should make sure there are no gaps and students are quiet. 

Teachers should always be head counting their students i.e. before they leave the classroom, when they stop outside at the checkpoint, and when they arrive back inside the building. 

Once the signal is given that it is safe to go back into the building, the teacher in the front should lead the students back into the building quietly.

*Bonus: The teacher should tell the student to put a pause with what they were doing in the bathroom and come out to join the class because this is a fire drill.

How should staff be professional in the work environment?

Staff should follow rules, complete tasks that were assigned, understand what staff expectations are, being accountable for your actions, dress appropriately, and treat your fellow coworkers with respect.

What should staff do if students finish their homework early and/or they end their lesson/activity early?

Staff should always have simple transitional activities or games prepared for students (i.e. group games). They can also prepare independent activities like worksheets, workbooks, and reading books.

What should staff do during the 2:15-2:30 and 5:30-5:45 timeslots?

  • Must be here ON TIME and leave no earlier than 5:45

  • Use this time to prep for lessons, prepare materials, weeklies, clean classrooms, talk to partners, check teacher’s notebook etc.

What type of student jobs should your classroom have?

Line leader, door monitor, bathroom monitor, office monitor, library monitor, table monitor, equipment/gym monitor, choice bin monitor, clean up monitor, supplies monitor, substitute, etc.

What should it look like in the hallways/stairwell?

Staff should be walking at a good pace (not too fast or slow), stopping at "checkpoints" (doors, bottom or top of stairs,etc.) to check students, wait for students to be ready to walk.

Students should be in 2 straight lines, in their line spots, walking properly, and being quiet.
