Consider the fractions: 6/9 and 4/6. a. What is the Least Common Multiple of the denominators? b. Add the two fractions. (Do not simplify your answer yet.) c. What is the Greatest Common Factor of the numerator and denominator of your answer to part (b)? d. How can you use the Greatest Common Factor to simplify the fraction in part (b)? Explain completely, and simplify the fraction. (Note: you do not have to convert it to a mixed number.)
a. 18 b. 24/18 c. 6 is the greatest common factor. d. Divide the 24/18 by a giant one with 6 in the numerator and the denominator because 6 is the biggest number that can evenly go into both 24 and 18. 24/18=4/3.

Is the following expression simplified correctly? If so "prove it" and if not explain where Mr. Ekel made his mistake and why he might have made his it. l 7-9 l + -5 + l 5 l Step 1: 2 + -5 + l 5 l Step 2: -3 + l 5 l Step 3: -3 + -5 Step 4: -8
It is not correct. Mr. Ekel was doing fine until Step 3. But there he changed l 5 l to - 5 which is incorrect. The absolute value of 5 is 5. Maybe he was thinking that the absolute value symbol makes a number into it's opposite but really it just tells you how far away from zero the number is.

The ball on Timmy the Bucket's (yup that's his name) kendama started 6 inches bellow the big cup. Timmy made the ball travel 9 inches up before it fell 3 inches and landed perfectly on the big cup. Describe the total distance the ball traveled in an expression using absolute value.
l 9 l + l -3 l = 12 Timmy the Bucket's ball traveled a total of 12 inches.

At the Divisional Frog Jumping Contest, Big Toad, a strong competitor, jumped 3.5 feet due north of the starting point, but then jumped 0.75 feet south. Frog Prince jumped three feet due west, paused, and jumped 5.75 feet east. Which frog had the overall greatest distance from the starting point? Justify your answer using absolute value.
They jumped equal distances from the starting point. Big toad jumped 3.5 feet away from the start and back 0.75 feet (3.5+ -0.75 =2.75). The absolute value of 2.75 is 2.75 so that is how far away he ended up from the starting point. Frog Prince jumped 3 feet away from the starting point and then jumped 5.75 feet in the opposite direction (3+ - 5.75= -2.75). The absolute value of -2.75 is 2.75 so that is how far away he ended up from the starting point. The absolute value of 2.75 and -2.75 are both 2.75 so they ended the same distance away from the start.

LaceDarius took down the banner from the competition, folded it in half, and then folded it in half again. The resulting rectangle measured 6 feet by 8 feet. a. What fraction of the original banner is showing once it is folded up? Explain. b. What are the dimensions of the banner when it is unfolded? Explain.
a. 1/4 of the banner is showing because he folded it in half two times. 1/2*1/2=1/4. b. The dimensions of the banner when it is unfolded is 24 feet by 32 feet.
