This electronic device can be used to reset the electrical rhythm of the heart in specific circumstance's.
What is an AED?
A person who is choking, but can still talk and cough has this type of airway obstruction. We don't intervene for this!
What is partial?
This stage of scene management includes ensuring your safety and assessing what happened.
What is the Primary Survey?
This is the rate of compressions you are aiming for in all casualty ages when doing CPR to best simulate the heart beat. Love that Saturday Night Fever!
What is 100-200/minute?
If a conscious person with a good heart rhythm is to touching a casualty during AED analysis, the procedure will likely result in this.
What is a NO SHOCK advisory.
Who can touch the patient during defibrillation of the heart?
Who is no one
Once a full airway obstruction is established, we do one of these 2 things if the casualty is conscious. Don't worry, pick one or the other and just do it!
What are abdominal thrusts or back blows?
Once you have established that the patient is unconscious and not breathing, you really need to do this.
What is call for help and an AED
This is the only time we stop CPR to reassess the patient, otherwise we keep going.
When something significant changes.
If you decide that CPR is needed on an infant, or someone suffering oxygen starvation (like drowning), you would do this prior to calling 911 if no phone was immediately available.
What is 2 minutes of full CPR.
The AED does this process prior to shocking, to ensure the patient is in a shockable rhythm?
What is analyze?
You can try this technique if the casualty is obviously pregnant, or otherwise too large for you to get your arms around.
What is a chest thrust?
Upon approaching a casualty, you can do this to establish level of consciousness even before touching them.
What is yell, shout?
Bystanders cannot pronounce death in the field, but you can safety cease CPR efforts under these conditions.
Its too unsafe to continue, you are exhausted, the casualty recovers or someone takes over
You could do this for a person at a scene who is trying to help, but clearly is in the way, or performing first aid incorrectly.
What is give them another task.
An AED can only shock a person if there heart is in one of these two rhythms.
Pulsless VTACH, or VFIB
This force of physics can significantly help resolved an airway obstruction in adult, child and infant casualties....Thanks Mr. Newton.
What is gravity?
You need to get this from a conscious casualty, but its implied if they are unconscious
What is consent?
Although the procedure for CPR including compression depth of 1/3rd of the chest, one must pat attention to these 2 things in infants.
The tilt of the head, and the volume of air
All casualties who are unconscious and not breathing get this...including those with full airway obstruction.
What is CPR
New AEDs deliver a shock in this format....from pad A to pad B, then B back to A to help ensure the shock is delivered.
What is biphasic
Once a full airway obstruction occurs, the casualty will lose consciousness in about 1 minute, if its not resolved, this will start to occur at about 4 minutes.
What is brain damage?
This law promotes bystanders to stop and render first aid in Ontario, similar to other provinces. But it does not cover professional responders on duty.
What is the Good Samaritan Law?
Continuous, high quality compressions is critical to prevent the blood characteristics from changing to this...and once it happens, its not coming back.
What is acidosis?
The minor difference in CPR when dealing with an airway obstruction. You need to check it!
What is the airway prior to breaths.
