Self-care includes any intentional actions you take to care for your physical, mental, and emotional health

What does Specific mean? 


The more specific the goal, the more likely it is to be accomplished. When setting a specific goal think of the 6 "W" Questions:

What should you be aware of with leisure activities?

of things you may be doing trot take up a lot of your time but don't support your self-care such as too much time on the internet, watching TV, even sleeping. These can all be relaxing, enjoyable activities in moderation but can become a way of retreating and isolating yourself

How do you deal with certain people? 

You don't have to cut them out of your life (especially with family, that may not even be an option!) but choose the time you will spend with them carefully.

· Make sure that your time with these people has a clear end.

What does measurable mean? 

Establish how you will measure the progress of the goal. Ask questions such as: How much? How many? How will know when I have reached my goal?

How can you enjoy leisure activities? 

Get involved in a sport or hobby that you love! Find other people who are doing the same thing! Knowing that people are counting on you to show up can help motivate you.

What does attainable mean? 

If a goal is important to you, begin to figure out ways to make it possible. Sometimes goals can seem difficult to accomplish, but you can find ways to develop the capacity to reach them by developing your skills, attitudes, beliefs, and abilities. Create opportunities to achieve your goals. This can include shrinking your goals, creating short term goals, and breaking them down into smaller goals.

Treat leisure appointments as seriously as business appointments. If you have plans to do something for fun, mark it on your calendar

· Where? Identify a location to complete the goal.

· When? Set a time frame for the goal.

· Which? Identify the requirements and constraints.

· Why? What are the benefits of accomplishing the goal.

What does realistic mean? 

You need to be willing and able to work towards your goal. The goal should be high enough to create an internal motivation towards accomplishing your goal. Don't set goals that arc too easy and require minimal motivation or exertion of effort. Set a high goal that you believe is achievable.

Make your self-care a priority, not something that happens (or doesn't happen!) by accident

What does Timely mean? 

Establish a time frame for the goal. Know when you would like to accomplish your goal by. Setting a date can motivate you to working towards achieving your goal with a sense of urgency and increased motivation.
