According to Bowlby, there are three types of attachment styles. What are they and why is the first year of life critical to forming attachments? How might IPV impact attachment?
***DOUBLE JEOPARDY
During the first year of life, children are expected to bond with at least one parental figure. Consistent and reassuring responses from the parent help to build a secure attachment, but if the parent displays erratic responses or leaves the child unattended for a long period of time, it can lead to two unhealthy attachment styles.
The three types are:
1. Secure attachment - This individual grows up to trust their partners, offers them the benefit of the doubt, and generally respects their partner's space. They are not fearful of their partner's motives.
2. Anxious attachment - This individual grows up to be wary of commitment, constantly seeks reassurance, and may question whether their partner wants to leave them quite frequently.
3. Avoidant attachment - This individual learned that being close to someone is dangerous. Thus, they often pull away in relationships and remain cold.
A child who witnesses IPV could develop one of the latter two types of attachment if their relationship with the primary caregiver is harmed as a result of the abuse.
