What are the roles of rape-crisis workers and intimate partner violence advocates? Lastly, why is self-care so important for these specific positions in the criminal justice system?

Rape crisis workers are typically female and trained to respond 24/7 to rape victims, which can include their ability to meet victims at the hospital, assist them in court proceedings, and provide general support. IPV advocates are trained to respond to immediate safety concerns of IPV victims/survivors and also operate similarly to rape-crisis workers. They, too, tend to be female and assist in legal proceedings. In many cases, women involved in these professions have been a victim of either (or both) types of crimes, too, but not always. Self-care is important because they are at an increased risk of experiencing burn-out and secondary trauma stress (STS).

What is the Red Zone? Why is it it a dangerous time?

The Red Zone is a term that refers to the first 6 weeks on campus, starting in the Fall semester. This timeframe proves especially dangerous for young, female freshmen who do not know their surroundings, are away from parental supervision for the first time, and who likely do not have friends yet. For these reasons, sexual predators are on the lookout for these young students and this is when colleges and universities see the highest number of sexual assaults and rapes.

What are shackling policies? What are some of the warnings against them?

Shackling policies in female correctional institutions mandate that pregnant female inmates must be shackled during the duration of their labor until the child is born. Often, this is dangerous for the women, who are unlikely to pose any real threat for escape due to the pains of labor. Time and again, doctors condemned this practice which is likely to harm mother or baby, especially in the case that an emergency Caesarian is required. Furthermore, it prevents the doctors from being able to move the mother to help during labor. It is dangerous for mother and child.

Historically, what was so controversial about the treatment of pregnant police officers?

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 strictly prohibits the denial of employment due to one's pregnancy, and yet, years later in the 1980's, many departments (including Washington DC) secretly tested the drug tests of female recruits and active police officers for pregnancy. This was done *without* the consent of the women involved, and even worse, the agencies would use pregnancy as a tool to prohibit them from entering police departments or from progressing in the field. Still, in 2016, women were fighting against police departments who gave them "light" duties while pregnant.
