The idea that each person has their own individual story to tell throughout their life. The stories help shape that person. This therapy helps separate the person or people from the problem they are encountering. It allows them to rely on their own skills and abilities to objectively see the problem rather than feeling like the story shapes how they should be dealing with the problem or finding a solution.

Social workers use this in order to help client identify a problem that they would like to solve, create an action plan in order to find a solution, and then work towards that goal together using strategies that can be changed as necessary until the problem is resolved.

Transgenerational therapy
This form of therapy is used by social workers to help clients utilize their own strengths and abilities to create solutions for problems the client would like to solve. This form of therapy allows the client to feel actively involved in the solution and to develop a sense of pride and fulfillment and being able to solve a solution using themselves as a resource.
