False: When cooking with stainless steel it is best to keep heat at medium or below (with the exception of boiling liquid).  Cooking on high heat can:

  • Burn food.
  • Cause oil to smoke.

  • Increase the risk of warping thinner pans.

This position keeps your fingers clear from any possibility of harm.  The worst possible outcome of a slip up would be skinned knuckles, but you keep your fingertips!

Handle turned inward (not sticking out over the edge of the stove...but also not over another burner).

Kitchens are small with multiple people moving around.  Bumping into a pan handle could easily cause an accident.  Pan handles in is also a good practice at home, especially if children are present.

Many students reach their hands into a hot oven to remove food.  Even with oven mitts, this is a burn risk.

Why, and what should you do instead?

Oven mitts do not cover your arms, which can easily come into contact with hot surfaces when reaching into an oven.

Instead: With your oven mitts on, pull the partway out of the oven.  Pick up your hot dish without reaching into the oven.
