What was the Procedure?

In this study they had a sample of 149 students that were both Singaporean and American. They split the people into two groups: one group is going to be prim with western culture (american) and the other group is going to be primed with eastern culture (singaporean).  Then they were given a shopping scenario on buying a book and they were asked if they would wait a week to get the book or pay more money to get faster shipping. They were also asked the first three politicians that came to mind.

What was the Procedure?

Berry used three different cultures for this experiment. They had people that came from rice farms and the other two groups that relied on fishing and hunting. They were then given a paper with 9 lines. The top line was a standard line. Their task was to identify the line that was equal to the standard line. In their paper there was a line that had an X next to it. They were told that this is the line that most people choose.

What were the Results?

They saw that people that were exposed to western culture were more willing to pay extra than the people that were exposed to eastern culture. The people that were primed to eastern culture were willing to not spend money on the fast shipping. They also did the same thing in the three politicians, the people that were primed with western named western politicians and the people that were primed with eastern were able to name eastern politicians.

What were the Results?

None of the lines that had a X was the correct answer but there was conformity because they chose what they assumed others chose. We can also see that the Tenme group had a higher score of conformity than others.

Indulgence vs. restraint

Indulgent cultures allow people to enjoy life and have fun. Restrained cultures have stricter control through strict social norms. Indulgent cultures tend to believe that they are in control of their lives; restrained cultures are more fatalistic.
