Communities have changed historically, including new forms of transportation, changing industries, and increasing populations. Communities grow and change at different rates.

What happened in New York in 1664?

The British gained control of the city and renamed it New York. Previously, it was named New Amsterdam by the Dutch settlers in the early 1600s.

How does a community change based on its changing population and new immigrants?

The new population and immigrants may bring their traditions and customs to the community, changing the culture of the community. People of the community may get to experience new celebrations and traditions.

The first long-distance steamboat carried passengers from New York City up the Hudson River to Albany.

What things about community stayed the same and what has changed?

The natural features of the community such as the lake and some of the trees are still the same. However, many things about the community have changed. More homes and buildings probably mean that the population increased. The land that the cattle ranch was on has been replaced by a railroad, roads, houses, and other buildings.

Why are many of our country's first settlements near water?

Settlers needed water for drinking, washing, farming, and watering livestock. They could also travel on the waterways by boat.

How did railroads change the United States in the 1800s?

New communities grew along the railroad lines. Cities from across became linked together. Goods and resources were transported more easily to new areas.

Give three examples about how transportation has changed over time and how it has affected communities.

Some examples that show how transportation has changed over time include: 

-New York opened its first subway line in 1904. This allowed for workers in Manhattan to live farther out in the Bronx.

-Beginning in the 1820s rail lines were built to connect cities in many parts of the country. This allowed for goods and resources to be transported easier.

-In 1908, Henry Ford's Model T made cars affordable to average people. Many people were then able to move out of downtown areas to new suburban communities near highways.
