The be-substitution test is used to determine if a word is a linking verb or not. 

You use the forms of be to substitute the word in the sentence. If it WORKS, then the word was a linking verb. 

Example: She seems very happy today. SUBSTITUTE was for seems -> She was very happy today. -> it worked, so SEEMS is a LINKING VERB.
