What is the water cycle?
The movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the earth
100
What is Water Vapor?
When water evaporates and turns into gas, it is called "water vapor"
100
What are the four seasons?
Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall
100
Put the four seasons in their correct order
Summer, Spring, Winter, Fall
100
What is a "cycle"?
An order of events that repeats
200
What are the four stages of the water cycle?
Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, Collection
200
Fill in the blanks. Water + ________ = Gas
Water + HEAT = Gas
200
Which season is it in New York City when New York is closest to the sun?
Summer
200
Which season is it in New York City when New York is furthest to the sun?
Winter

List 2 other examples of cycles. Why are they cycles?
examples: recycling (because plastic things are used, melted down, and made into more plastic things, used, melted down...) the life cycle (something is born, grows up, has babies, dies, the babies grow up....) the cycle of the seasons (winter, spring, summer, fall, winter, spring summer, fall....) the school year cycle (beginning of the year, end of the year, summer, beginning of the year, end of the year....)

What is Evaporation?
When water gets hot and turns into a gas called water vapor.
300
Fill in the blanks. Gas + Cool = ___________
Gas + Cool = LIQUID (rain or precipitation)
300
Why do you think there is so much precipitation in the Spring? (Why does it rain more in the Spring?)
As the snow melts in the spring there is more water around, and it gets evaporated, condenses into clouds, and rains down.
300
What does "orbit" mean?
to go around something in a circle
300
What changes precipitation from rain to snow?
The temperature. If it is warm, it rains. If it is cold, it snows.
400
What is Condensation?
When water vapor Cools and Collects into Clouds
400
What causes precipitation?
When the clouds get too full of water they can not hold it anymore and it rains (or snows or hails or sleets)
400
What two directions does the earth spin?
1. around itself 2. around the sun
400
What season would it be in New York City if it was JUST summer and the sun is now a little further away?
Fall or Autumn
400
Why do you think clouds change from cumulus clouds to stratus clouds? What does this have to do with the water cycle?
As clouds get more full of water, they change from cumulus clouds to stratus clouds. The heavier they get with water, the darker they get and the lower in the sky they get. This has to do with the second stage of the water cycle (condensation) and the third stage of the water cycle (precipitation).

Explain the glass bottle/burner experiment that we did yesterday. What were the steps? What happened? Why?
1. Ms. L put water in a glass vase, put the vase on the burner, covered the top with plastic wrap, and put ice cubes on top. 2. The burner heated up the water and began to boil. 3. The boiling water evaporated and floated towards the top. 4. The top was very cold (because of the ice cubes) and the water vapor condensed 5. The water vapor turned back into liquid and slid down the sides of the vase.

Explain the water bottle experiment that we did yesterday. What were the steps? What happened? Why?
1. Ms. L put a bit of water in a water bottle 2. She put a match in the bottle. This heated up the water. 3. The water began to evaporate (change from liquid to gas) and then it began to condense (change from gas into liquid)
500
How long does it take the earth to spin around itself once?
It takes ONE day, or 24 hours
500
How long does it take the earth to spin around the sun once?
It takes one year, or 365 days

How would a strong breeze affect the last stage of the water cycle, collection?
If it is a strong breeze, the precipitation (the rain or the snow) would be blown to a different location. It would collect somewhere else, a place that is different from where it started.
