1. What is relative dating?

2. How is age determined?

1. The process of determining if one specimen is older or younger then one another without knowing their specific age.

2. They look at a sequence of rocks to try to decipher when an event occurred relative to the other events represented in that sequence. Usually if it is deeper in the ground, it is older.

How does Carbon-14 dating work?

Carbon-14 dating is a method of age determination that depends upon the decay to nitrogen of radiocarbon (carbon-14)

All living organisms have a set number of carbon in their body.  Once the organism dies, however, it ceases to absorb carbon-14, so that the amount of the radiocarbon in its tissues steadily decreases. Carbon-14 has a half-life of 5,730 years. Because carbon-14 decays at this constant rate, an estimate of the date at which an organism died can be made by measuring the amount of its residual radiocarbon

What are the 3 main differences between Extrusive and Intrusive rocks?

Extrusive:

- Formed on the surface from magma that has emerged from underground

- cool quickly

- Small crystals

Intrusive:

- Form from magma underground

- Cool slower

- Large crystals

- Geology

- Volcanologist

- Seismologist

Geology: Age of Earths core (10 million)

Volcanologist: Eruptions

Seismologist: Charles Richter developed the Richter scale, which measures earthquake magnitude.

How has absolute dating advanced our understanding of the human world in comparison to relative dating?

Absolute dating differs from relative dating in that it provides a specific numerical age for artifacts and features rather than just indicating whether one item is older or younger than another. This distinction is crucial because it allows archaeologists to create precise timelines and understand the chronological context of their findings.
