What does the D in DBT stand for?

Dialectical

100

What does the DBT assumption, "People are doing the best they can" mean?

We assume that at any given time, with the skills that they have currently, that they are doing the best they can -- EVEN if they can do better or need to change

100

What do you do if you need to leave or go off screen for a bit?

Use the chat function in the chat box on Zoom to tell one of the skills class facilitators that isn't talking/teaching at the moment
100

Can you eat during skills class?

Please eat! Even if you're eating spaghetti, we still want you to be on camera.

100

What is the policy about attendance in skills class?

Come on time, stay till the end. Let skills class facilitators know if you will be late or cannot make it.

Now there is a 1 time exception to missing skills class for the fee, but will still count towards accumulating misses

200

What is the goal of DBT?

To replace ineffective behaviors with effective behaviors/skills; to attain a life-worth-living

200

Do you have to believe the DBT assumptions?

No, but we ask that you ASSUME them anyways
200

If you cannot make it to skills class, does your other family member still need to come?

YES

200

What is the policy about being on camera?

We need you to be on camera the whole time, so that we can make sure that you are okay and that there is not a party of other people in the background!
200

How many misses can you have in skills class before you have dropped out of the program?

4 skills classes in a ROW

300

Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Walking the Middle Path

People have to change their own behavioral responses and alter their environment for their life to change

300

Who created DBT?

Marsha Linehan

300

Why do we focus on skills in skills class and not so much about our background/history?

Short on story, long on skill - we want to learn here how to implement skills effectively in our lives, and we don't need much of the "story" to understand that; want to spend the majority of the time on skills and skills application

300

What does the term, "Target behavior" mean?

A target behavior is any behavior that might be contagious to others, that you are targeting on your diary card, or is something that you want to work on/improve in your life. We do not want to discuss during our sessions current or past problem behaviors that could be contagious to others.

{Michelle will read out categories}

400

Which skills do we do for 2 weeks at the beginning of each module?

Mindfulness Skills

Extra Point: Why do we do it at the beginning of every module?

400

What does the DBT assumption, "People need to do better, try harder, and be more motivated to change" mean?

The fact that people are doing the best they can, and want to do better, does not mean that these are enough to solve the problem -- we still need to be more motivated to change our behavior.
400
Why do we ask that you don't begin a private friendship or relationship with someone else in skills class while in skills class?

Don't want others to potentially drop out of skills class if there is a rupture between you both; don't want some to be having a private relationship in ways that others feel left out or that can't be shared with the rest of the class

400

What states can you log on from? (need to get at least 4 out of 6)

PA, MD, DC, VA, NC, DE

All others are excluded

400

What is a missing links and when do we do it?

A missing links is the problem-solving that occurs if someone does not have their homework. We will examine what factors led up to you not having your homework and if there's anything we can do differently in the future to help you make sure you have your homework if the same circumstances were to happen again.

500

What is a dialectic?

Two things that seem opposite that can both be true at the same time

500

Why do we have DBT assumptions?

Helps us have more flexibility/dialectical thinking; allows for a common understanding/language, which means we need a common set of principles that we can all abide by to facilitate learning

500

How do we make sure that our skills classes are confidential? (List 2 examples)

Don't share anything that is said in skills class with others; Make sure there is no one else in your room with you and that no one else can hear your computer; Make sure that we are only using first names on your Zoom name

500

What is the one thing Michelle will get very upset about if you do this in skills class?

Driving!

Bonus point: What mindfulness skills do we need you to use in order to maintain attention during skills class?

500

How many cycles of DBT do we usually recommend?

2

The first round is for learning the skills themselves, the second round is learning how to apply them in all contexts
