On a G1 road test, Shannon's applicant uses 1 hand while backing in a three-point turn maneuver. It is done smoothly and controlled. Shannon marks the applicant for steering method minor. Is this correct?

Nope.

Do not score if done smoothly and positively. However, the examiner may score ‘Incorrect use of steering’ as Major if noticed that there is “uncertain steering - not done positively or smoothly” while using only one hand.

The error ‘Steering method’ is scored only when the applicant has “some difficulty completing the maneuver (5pt turn)” as Minor, or “considerably difficulty completing the maneuver (7pt+ turn)” as Major.

The proper protocol for recusing a test?

- Tell a sup/designate that you need to recuse and why before you write it down. It is supposed to be approved before not after.

- Ensure you write it down legibly and fill in all fields.

- Recuse for only the reasons listed (with exception to unique situations that the sup is aware of).

During a G1 road test, Big Bosses applicant is very nervous and asks to end the test. Big Boss calls for someone to pick her up and leaves the applicant alone in the car parked safely on Heatherington. Is this ok and why or why not?

Nope. You can never leave a G1 applicant alone during a road test.

MC's applicant is driving along at 52 on Walkley (not in a community safety zone). MC warns her very kindly to watch her speed. A few minutes later, MC's applicant while driving along straight on Walkley speeds to 53 (again, not in a community safety zone).

How should MC proceed?

MC should TIVL the applicant for speeding as listed in BN-29-25.

You're an auditor watching John begin a G1 exit test. He approaches the applicant. With a big friendly smile, he says "Hi, I am John. I will be your examiner today. May I see your driver's license?" He asks the applicant to state his name and tells them he is going to do a vehicle check before the test. He stands directly in front of the car and asks the applicant to signal left and right.

What feedback would you provide to him after the test?

Walkley is a bilingual dec. Our greeting whether you speak French or not is :Hello, Bonjour my name is _______. I will be your examiner today.

John also forgot to check the full name and date of birth and should never stand directly in front of the car to check the signals.

After reading the preamble verbatim to your applicant you keenly observe your surroundings and provide directions to exit the parking space to begin the test. The applicant then reveals that they are unable to place the vehicle into the appropriate gear to move from their parked position.

How you would proceed?

The inability to engage the gear should be handled in the same way as when an applicant struggles to start the vehicle—offer assistance. The G1 exit marking guide states, "An applicant may be unable to start their vehicle due to nervousness.

Set the applicant at ease – show the applicant." This approach should apply to starting off for any class of road test.

According to the marking guides, there is no error criteria for this situation

What the Move Over Law in Ontario (HTA Sec 159 (2,3)) is? Explain it.

Examiners should be aware of the Move Over Law in Ontario (HTA Sec 159 (2,3)), requiring drivers to slow down and move over one lane when passing an emergency vehicle or tow truck with flashing lights. Before the “point of no return” where the applicant can no longer complete any safe action, the examiner would intervene to request the applicant either slow and/or change lanes depending on road configuration (slow down if only one lane; change lanes if on a multi-lane road) and score the applicant using DE 5.3.3, Driving Along, ‘Fails to use Caution or Obey Emergency Vehicles’ as they failed to respond appropriately to the emergency vehicle and take appropriate action. In all cases, examiner verbal intervention/instruction/prompting is required.

Praveen's applicant has a small jerry can filled a quarter of the way with gasoline. He drives a truck, and it is secured in the cab of the truck. Can Praveen do this road test?

BN-66-25. Praveen cannot. MTO clarified, all Slip Tanks, Jerry Cans, Cylindrical Fuel tanks, must be purged and cleaned of all fuel residue. It is considered an OOO.

Please check diamond plated integrated toolboxes to ensure they are not housing any of the above.

JP. A just finished a paper G2 exit test and given the applicant the result and the yellow copy of the test. He forgot to include previous number of tests. JP.A writes 0 for previous number of tests and hands in the paper scoresheet. What should he have done differently?

JP.A should never write on a white copy without the yellow. He should have fixed it before the applicant left and if not possible, he should take the error as is.

From your collision awareness training, how should you be positioned in the vehicle and what should you be checking to ensure you are safe? List 2 things.

Headrest/Seatbelt/Seating Position (Collision Awareness Annual Training).

Driver Examiner’s Seating Position

•Your seat should only be moved back far enough so you can reach the steering wheel comfortably yet still leave enough room between the knees and the dashboard/glove compartment.

•Your seat should be as upright as possible so that your shoulders are in contact with the backrest; no more than about a 30-degree recline.

•In many modern cars, the seat’s height can also be adjusted - Keep your eye level at about halfway up the windshield.

Seatbelt system should cross chest and lower hips and should never be under the arm or behind the back

Reclining the Examiner seat too far back can have serious consequences!

The centre of the headrest should be slightly above the top of the ear.

•The top of the headrest should be at least as high as the top of the head.

•Ideally, the distance between the headrest and the back of the head should be between 5 to 10 centimeters (2 to 4 inches).

How to inspect a DI brake correctly. Please describe the process.

*For vehicles equipped with a DI brake: Ask the applicant to depress the brake and then put the vehicle into gear. For bar style brakes, visually check that the DI brake depresses as well. Examiners are not allowed to perform unannounced in-motion brake checks to verify functionality.

If a dual brake has been properly removed on a school vehicle —regardless of signage, the presence of a DI licence, or other factors—the examiner will proceed with the test. Regulations only require a dual brake to be available during instruction, and not during the road test or other times of operation

Franks applicant has a G license already and is completing a highway test. Frank finds it weird but goes through the test anyways. The applicant fails the test. At the end, Frank, with the applicant's permission, gives the test result to the applicant's son as the applicant is senior and having trouble understanding. They thank Frank and they leave.

What type of test is this and what should have been done?

This is a TEDC (testing for driver control test). This applicant should have been brought in to have the license downgraded. Before the test, the examiner should advise the applicant of the next steps should they not be successful.

Edward completes all the correct steps at the beginning of his test. He is friendly and patient with the applicant. He asks the applicant to sign the same as his DL. The applicant struggles to do so and after a few attempts freaks out and starts yelling and is physically becoming threatening and aggressive towards Edward. Edward gets out of the car and Kale walks by and intervenes telling the applicant to calm down and that his behavior is inappropriate.

What should have been done immediately in this situation and why? Need to list off to get points.

BN-24-25.

Completely stop engaging with the customer and come to tell a supervisor immediately. Engaging is only going to further the problem, and the applicant may physically assault you.

The protocol as in the Briefing note is that a supervisor will ask the applicant to leave (or call police) then request a No Trespass letter.

Barry operates a driving school. He worked with us in the past. He is a nice guy. His applicant is so excited to do their road test. Guy takes out the test. After the test, Guy exits and is approached by Barry without the applicant and asked why the applicant was not successful. Guy knows him and trusts him. Should he tell him?

No. We cannot give test results to anyone without the applicant's consent. We are to maintain professional boundaries with DI's at all times.
