This system of slavery adopted by the Spanish in the early 16th century, expected Native American communities to meet high quotas of materials to provide to the Spanish. If they did not meet this quota they were subject to violence and sometimes exection.
Encomienda system
A group of angry former indentured servants complained to Virginia governor William Berkeley that the native Americans were raiding their farms. He did not want to make war with the natives so he did nothing. Nathaniel Bacon, a farmer in western Virginia, put together an army of former and current indentured servants along with former and current enslaved people. They successfully wiped out the Native presence and then they descended on Jamestown, forcing governor Berkeley to flee.
