First School for the Deaf
What is 1812? 1812 – John Braidwood began teaching a private class of deaf children at Bolling Hall in Cobbs, Virginia. His attempt failed and he moved on to establish a small school at the Cobbs Plantation where he taught the Bolling children. The school closed in 1816. ASL is invented

Gallaudet University
What is 1864? The Enabling Act was signed by President Abraham Lincoln. The college was previously established as Kendall School in 1857 with Edward Miner Gallaudet as superintendent. On April 8, 1864, the 38th congress of the America, authorized the Columbia Institution for the Deaf and Dumb and the Blind, to confer degrees in liberal arts and sciences that are usually conferred in colleges. Edward M. Gallaudet became the first president and continued until 1910. In September, the CIDDB was named the National Deaf Mute College.
