What is 1864?
The Enabling Act was signed by President Abraham Lincoln. The college was previously established as Kendall School in 1857 with Edward Miner Gallaudet as superintendent. On April 8, 1864, the 38th congress of the America, authorized the Columbia Institution for the Deaf and Dumb and the Blind, to confer degrees in liberal arts and sciences that are usually conferred in colleges. Edward M. Gallaudet became the first president and continued until 1910. In September, the CIDDB was named the National Deaf Mute College.
