what are the 3 mortis's and what do they mean?

Rigor Mortis - rigid death

Livor Mortis- Bluish death

Algor Mortis- Cooling death

100

list the 5 stages of decay in order from beginning to end

Use the forensic names-no nick names (bloat, active, etc.)

define entomology

study of bugs/insects

100

Define PMI and what it is

Post Mortem Interval: Time between death and when the body was found

100

what is a group of crows called?

a murder

200

What is the importance of the glacier equation in forensic science and what mortis does it belong to?

Helps determine time of death by using temperature of the body

200

what are the two bugs that eat away hair AND which stage does this occur?

Moths and Mites

200
what 2 insects are most commonly found on a decayed corpse?

Beetles & Flies

200

What are 3 factors that will impact the rate in which the body cools?

We discussed several :)

1.Temp of the environment

2.Type/Amount of Clothing on the victim

3. Wetness of the Clothing

4. Is there air movement? (In a bag, buried, etc.)

5. Size of the individual

6. Was the body engulfed in water?

200

In hockey, what is it called when one player scores 3 or more goals in the same game?

Hat trick

_______________ is the process of digestive enzymes breaking down muscles and other parts of the body during decay. It occurs in stage _______ of decay and is essential to the process of ___________ Mortis.

Autolysis is the process of digestive enzymes breaking down muscles and other parts of the body during decay. It occurs in stage 1 of decay and is essential to the process of Rigor Mortis.

300

The waxy buildup that will appear on skeletal remains from the breakdown of fats. Will appear on the fattiest areas of the body.

What is the significance of the 1.5 in the glacier equation?

+200 pts if you can CORRECTLY provide the glacier equation.

1.5 is significant because it is how many degrees the body cools PER HOUR (on average) after death

98.4 - current temp / 1.5 = estimated T.O.D

300

what is the monkey's name in the movie Aladdin?

Abu

400

part 1: What does each mortis allow investigators to determine?

Part 2: What do investigators use to determine this for EACH mortis?

Rigor mortis= Time since death by looking @ stiffness

Algor mortis= Time since death by looking @ internal temperature of the body

Livor mortis= Position of the body after death/if the body has been moved by looking @ lividity

400

A body is found. The body has collapsed and the liquids from the body have seeped into the soil. What stage is this? Give me the actual name, not #

Black Putrefaction

400

what is this insect?

Hint: think about the lifecycle we talked about. what was the name of that particular fly?

Blowfly

400

the vocab word/phrase that refers to a species that may feed on a fresh corpse while other species may show up weeks later

Species Succession

400

what state is this?

Indiana!!

500

What causes rigor mortis?

In other words, what causes muscles to stiffen?

ACID BUILDUP IN THE BODY!

After death, your body goes in fight or flight still trying to survive. even though you aren't breathing in oxygen, your body converts lactic and pyruvic acid as a 2nd source of energy. Changing the body's pH- too acidic!!

500

what are the two smells that makes up the scent of death?

No- I will not count off if you spell them wrong

Cadaverine and Putrescine

500

There was a particular fly that I mentioned would most likely be found in stage 4 of decay... what was the name of that fly?

Hint: think about what stage 4 is and what occurs in that stage

Cheese Skipper Fly!

500

Other than Weather factors, what were the other 3 questions entomologists consider when determining the PMI? Below is 1. give me the other 2.

Hint: We discussed 3...One of them is: Were there other species of bugs that may have eaten the maggots we use to analyze?

Did the victim ingest drugs or were poisoned at the time of death, thus either slowing down or speeding up the insect's life cycle?

Was the body enclosed or wrapped in a material preventing the flies from finding the corpse?

500

How many U.S. Presidents have been assassinated?

4!
