Roles of Organisms
Food Chains and Food Webs
Energy Flow in an Ecosystem
Human Impact on Ecosystems
100
What are producers?
An organism that makes it’s own food using abiotic elements in the ecosystem. This is done through the process of photosynthesis where plants use sunlight, moisture from the soil, and carbon dioxide from the air to produce their own food.
100
All food that has been eaten has received ________ from another source.
Energy
100
Do food chains show how much energy an organism needs?
No
100
How are animals affected by habitat loss?
Their food and shelter are taken away.
200
What are consumers?
Consumers are organisms that cannot make their own food.
200
What is a food chain?
A food chain is a sequence that shows how energy and nutrients are transferred from one organism to another in an ecosystem.
200
What three functions is energy used for?
1. Life functions. E.g. Movement, Breathe, Heart beating. Digestive system. 2. Gas and Waste. E.g. Stool, Flatulence, Heat, Urination, 3. Body growth and repair. E.g. Scars and scabs, replace skin cells, hair growth, nail growth.
200
How are plants affected by habitat loss?
Their habitats are taken away.
300
What are detrivores and decomposers?
Detrivore- An organism that feeds on the large parts of decaying plant and animal matter as well as waste material. E.g. Earthworm, Bloodworms, Dung Beetle Decomposer- Feed on remaining decaying matter and waste left behind by composers and detrivores. They break down their food into simple substances.
300
What is a food web?
A food web is a model that shows how food chains in an ecosystem are connected.
300
What are the three stages of the water cycle?
Evaporation, condensation, precipitation
300
Define Habitat Loss
Habitat loss is when organisms that live in a specific area no longer have somewhere to go.
400
What is a decomposer?
Decomposer- Feed on remaining decaying matter and waste left behind by composers and detrivores. They break down their food into simple substances.
400
If you eat a steak, are you just getting energy from the cow?
No. The cow got it’s energy from the grains that it was fed. The grains got it’s energy from the sun.
400
How does an organisms obtain the energy it needs to survive?
An organism obtains the energy it needs to survive by eating other organisms, or if it’s a plant, by producing it’s own food.
400
When is habitat loss good?
If a species is overpopulating an area, the only way to stop may be habitat loss. Habitat loss for animals may mean a habitat gain for humans . Forest fires can get rid of old, less nutritions growth, making room for fresh growth.
