Bent Blüdnikow maintains that without Brockdorff-Rantzau’s full support of Denmark’s policy during WWI, “it would have been impossible to keep Denmark out of the war.”

A civil servant who took over DRC operations from Dr. Sophus J.C. Meyer in March 1915. He was appointed as the head of The Danish Red Cross Central Bureau in 1917, and worked closely with the office in Petrograd on behalf of the DRC. He often butted heads with Harald Scavenius.

Danish envoy to Petrograd/St. Petersburg and hated cousin of Danish Foreign Minister Erik Scavenius. He was made part of the DRC envoy to Petrograd in 1915, and despite the DRC’s NGO status, he unofficially negotiated on the behalf of the Danish Foreign Ministry (DFM) when dealing with the Russians on DRC business. He often butted heads with Ludvig Dithmer, the head of DCR operations.

He was the Danish Foreign Minister during WWI. He previously worked as a counselor at the Danish legation in Berlin, and as such, had a unique perception, knowledge, and understanding of German interests and of the strained Danish-German relations.
