what is Persistent Disorder (Dysthymia)

also known as Dysthymia, in the DSM-5 is a chronic form of depression that is less severe than Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) but longer-lasting.

To be diagnosed with MDD 

the individual must experience at least five of the following symptoms for a continuous period of two weeks or longer, and at least one of the symptoms must be either a depressed mood or loss of interest/pleasure

To meet the criteria for PDD, an individual must experience a depressed mood for most of the day, for more days than not, for at least two years (one year for children and adolescents).

  • During the two-year period, the individual has never been without symptoms from above.
  • There has never been a manic episode, or a hypomanic episode and criteria have never been met for cyclothymic disorder 
  • Symptoms cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning
