Four out of five of it's layers are made up of dead skin cells
What is the epidermis?
Commonly called a boil, this infection is a walled-off abscess containing pus that develops in a preexisting site of folliculitis.
A flat area on the skin that is either lighter or darker than the surrounding skin (example: freckle)
What is a macule?
The lateral edges and soles of the feet usually have dry, scaly, lesions that are itchy; cracks and fissures can develop
What is tinea pedis?
Asymmetry, Boarder, Color, Diameter, and Evolving
What are the ABCs of Melanoma?
Made up of largely and keratin and found on the dorsal surfaces of all fingers and toes
A bacterial infection characterized by a honey-colored crust over an area of skin that had a previous injury or disease.
What is impetigo?
An elevated well-circumscribed lesion filled with white blood cells or bacteria
What is a pustule?
A common fungal infection in wrestling characterized by scale with clear center areas (central clearing)
A skin cancer arising from the cells within the melanin (melanocytes)
What is melanoma?
Comprised of the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis
What is the integumentary system?
An infection of the nail fold that separates the skin from the nail
What is paronychia?
A temporary smooth elevation of the skin that itches and is typically red or pink
What is a wheal?
Common in the warm summer months this infection commonly affects the inner thighs and genitalia in both men and women (more common in men).
What is tinea cruris?
The most common skin malignancy that occurs twice as often in males than females and is characterized by a pearly, translucent pink papule.
What is basal cell carcinoma?
Contains vascular and sensory structures, hair follicles, and sweat glands
What is the dermis?
A bacterial skin infection that is characterized by inflammation to the hair follicles on the face, chest, axilla, buttock, groin, and legs.
What is folliculitis?
A small bump (less than 5 mm in diameter) that is palpable.
What is a papule?
Common in children and can be spread by pets, this fungal infection can be found on the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes.
What is tinea capitis?
Spreading of malignant growths beyond the primary site
What is metastasis?
The moon-shaped, white layer that lies at the proximal end of all nails
What is the lunula?
A viral infection that is highly contagious and characterized by fluid filled vesicles on an erythematous base
What is herpes simplex?
A fluid-filled blister larger than 5mm
What is a bulla?
A yeast infection seen marked by areas of hyper- or hypopigmentation
Common risk factors include fair skin, blonde or red hair, and light eyes
