In what ways did the automobile industry help the growth of the Midwest?
City streets became more lively. Automobiles, trolley cars, and buses made it possible for workers to live farther from their jobs. Shopping, visiting, and vacationing became easier for people. Trucks joined trains as an important way to ship goods. The auto industry needed a lot of workers for their factories - European immigrants and blacks from the SE provided much of this labor, moving to the automobile centers of Detroit and Cleveland.
