DISASTER MANAGEMENT

Disaster Management can be defined as the organization and management of resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies, in particular preparedness, response and recovery in order to lessen the impact of disasters (IFRC)

MENTION FLOOD MITIGATION

Flood mitigation approaches fall into two categories—structural and nonstructural. Structural forms of mitigation mitigate harm by reconstructing landscapes. They include floodwalls/seawalls, floodgates, levees, and evacuation routes.  Nonstructural measures reduce damage by removing people and property out of risk areas. They include elevated structures, property buyouts, permanent relocation, zoning, subdivision, and building codes.

DISASTER RISK FORMULA

Hazard X Vulnerability/ Capacity.

The bigger the capacity, the lower the risk. As H and V directly proportional to Risk, the higher it gets, the higher the risk. Public empowerment is indeed one of the keys!

DISASTER RISK REDUCTION (DRR)

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is an effort to reduce the damage caused by natural hazards like earthquakes, floods, droughts and cyclones, through an ethic of prevention. Disasters often follow natural hazards. A disaster's severity depends on how much impact a hazard has on society and the environment. Disaster risk reduction includes disciplines like disaster management, disaster mitigation and disaster preparedness, but DRR is also part of sustainable development.
