What is the distinction between the study of 'morality' and 'ethics'?
Ethics is the philosophical study of morality (Audi, 1999, p. 284). More simply, it is the philosophy of right and wrong. Ethics involves the process of determining right from wrong using moral reasoning, which is both an art and a science. Morality is the actual content of right and wrong, moral knowledge, and the end result of ethical deliberation (Rae, 2009, p. 15). While these two terms (ethics and morality) are used commonly as synonyms, the philosophical distinction is important; for instance, when discussing or determining the difference between what a person or group does (their moral action) and what a person or group ought to do (the right or good thing).
Most people know that making friends with their neighbor is right and murdering their neighbor is wrong. But why? Asking "why?" is not intended to cultivate doubts about right and wrong. You should not doubt that friendship is good and murder is bad, but it is important to know what makes an act right or wrong, in general.
Another thing ethicists focus on is the practical question of living an ethical life. What constitutes a life well lived? And how do you make the right decision when your choices seem morally ambiguous? Ethicists are interested in finding a reasonably clear and consistent method for ethical decision-making. Of course, how they approach this can vary dramatically. As we have seen with previous topics studied in this course, your worldview—particularly about ultimate reality and the nature of the universe—strongly impacts your perspective on related philosophical concerns, such as ethics and morality.
