Which is bigger? A light year or an AU?
A light year!
100
What is a light year?
The distance light travels in one year. Both a measure of time & distance!
100
What is an AU?
The distance from the earth to the sun
100
True or false: A theory is a guess.
FALSE. A theory is a strong scientific opinion which has a lot of research & evidence to support it.
100
What is parallax used for?
To measure the actual distances of stars/galaxies
200
Which is smaller? The solar system or the galaxy?
the solar system
200
Why do scientists use light years?
Because distances outside of our solar system are ENORMOUS and require larger units of measurement than miles, kilometers, or AU.
200
What is an AU used to measure?
Distances WITHIN a solar system
200
What evidence is there for the big bang theory?
The expanding universe, heat left over from the original big bang, and red shift of distant galaxies.
200
What is redshift?
The appearance of galaxies, as they move away from us, appear red because their wavelengths increase.
300
Which is closest? An object that is 0.5 ly away An object that is 1 ly away An object that is 100 AU away
The object that is 100 AU away is closest. There are over 63,000 AU in just 1 light year!!
300
How long does it take like to travel 9.46 trillion km?
1 year! That is the distance of the light year.
300
Why wouldn't you use an AU to measure to the next closest star?
The distance is too great (the number would be huge).
300
What causes REDSHIFT?
The wavelength of light given off from distant galaxies looks RED, because they are moving away from us, making the wavelength longer.
300
Why are models important for studying the universe?
because the distances are too large to recreate in class
400
Which is larger? The moon, the sun, or the solar neighborhood?
The solar neighborhood is a group of stars, so obviously it is the largest!
400
A star is 0.5 light years away from Earth. How long does it take for the light from that star to reach Earth?
0.5 years... or 6 months!
400
If I tell you that mercury is 0.3 AU from the sun, what can you conclude about its location in relation to the sun & earth?
Mercury is between the Sun and the Earth, because it is LESS than 1 AU.
400
How is the big bang theory different from the expanding universe theory?
The expanding universe theory explains what is happening today and why the galaxies are moving away from us, while the big bang theory explains how our universe began.
400
What is a scale and how is it created?
A scale is used to create a smaller/larger model of something that is not easy to recreate. A scale is made by creating a ratio (ex: 1 mile=1 in).
500
Which is the oldest? The moon, the hubble telescope, the earth, or the sun?
The sun! :)
500
An alien on planet x in the year 2014 is looking at the new years celebration on earth from 2010. How many light years away is this planet X? Give the distance in km for bonus points!
2014-2010= 4 light years away. or 4x9.46=37.84 trillion km
500
Why aren't light years used instead of AU when measuring the solar system?
Light years are much larger than the solar system, it is too big of a unit to use.
500
Your friend thinks the big bang theory isn't real, and that there isn't any evidence for it. Now that you've been in Ms. G's class, what would you tell them?
Answers may differ. Explain the importance of THEORIES, and the EVIDENCE that exists for the Big Bang Theory.
500
How is a telescope similar to a time machine?
Because the light we observe from distance places in the universe left those places years before we see them. We are looking at old light that has finally made its way to our eyes.
