Diversity is the spice of life!
Will you adapt already?
Only the "strong" survive!
It means nothing without evidence!
I had the geological time of my life!
100
Name all of the places where life can be found on Earth
Air, Water, land, underground, and in the soil
100
What are variations within a species.
Variations are different forms of traits that exist in a species such as height or eye color.
100
What does the term evolution mean?
change over time
100
What is a fossil?
A fossil is any remain or trace of ancient life. Fossils are often found in sedimentary rock
100
What is the fossil record
All of the fossils that have been collected and recorded by scientists.
200
What is biodiversity?
the number of different species of organisms living in a specific area
200
Define adaptation
An adaptation is a body shape, body process, or behavior that allows an organism to survive in its environment and carry out its life processes.
200
Define natural selection
the process in which organisms best suited for their environment are more likely to survive, reproduce, and pass traits on to offspring
200
How might anatomy be used to show evolutionary relationships?
Scientists compare similarities and differences in the body structures of living things. Often times, organisms with many similar body structures share a relatively recent common ancestor.
200
What is the geological time scale?
A time line which describes what organisms have lived on the Earth during what time.
300
Define species
A group of organisms that share comoon characteristics and can interbreed
300
Give an example of a physical adaptation that humans have.
opposable thumbs, binocular vision, large brain, bipedal, etc...
300
Give an example of how natural selection might work in nature.
An organism might be camouflaged for its environment. Organism with the best camouflage will not be eaten, and will survive to pass on the DNA which codes for the good camouflage. Over time, the population will concist of individuals with good camouflage as individuals with poor camouflage die out.
300
How is embryology used to show evolutionary relationships?
Scientists can study the development of many organisms to see if they grow in the same way. Study of the embryos of vertebrates shows that they all share an almost identical early development as they grow within the egg or womb.
300
What is the importance of the fossil record in developing the geological time scale?
Where fossils are found in the ground as well as the radioactive properties of the stone they are found in are used to date the time in which the fossil was formed.
400
Why do you think that tropical rain forests have such high biodiversity?
Tropical rain forests provide plenty of resources for organisms to survive. The temperature remains warm all year and rainfall is high. Rain Forests provide plenty of food, water, and shelter.
400
Explain how most plants are adapted to their environment.
Plants have chloroplasts which are located in the cells of leaves. Leaves are often raised in the air towards the sun. Plants have roots in the ground to collect rainfall that is absorbed into the soil.
400
Explain how a new species can develop from an already existing species.
When are large population is split up into smaller groups, those smaller groups may change due to the different environments in which they live. Over long periods of time, the populations may become so different that they no longer breed.
400
How can DNA be used to show evolutionary relationships?
Scientists can compare the proteins that exist within two organisms. Proteins are created by specific codes held in DNA. There are many proteins, and organisms who share similar DNA share many of the same proteins. Organisms who share similar DNA must share a common ancestor based on what we know about heredity.
400
What is a mass extinction? Give an example
a large scale disappearance of many species within a short period of time. Many believe the dinosaurs became extinct as a result of a series of meteor showers which hit the Earth.
500
Which group of organisms has the most species: insects, protists, plants, fungi, or bacteria?
insects
500
Give an example of a behavioral adaptation.
A viper sits perfectly still when in the presence of danger. Birds build nests in trees in order to keep eggs from predators.
500
Describe what it means if two organisms share a common ancestor. Give an example
Two organisms that share a common ancestor are organisms that have their own specific traits. These two organisms do share some traits that they have inherited from their common ancestor. Humans and chimpanzees.
500
What do you think is the most convincing evidence for evolution? Explain your answer
Currently, DNA evidence is providing the most reliable evidence for common ancestry. Fossil evidence is also very important because it gives us insight about organisms that are not available for DNA analysis
500
How is the rapid human destruction of tropical rain forests related to mass extinction?
As native people destroy rain forest to make room for crops, many unidentified and identified species are becoming extinct. So many species live in the rain forest and the destruction of these habitats can lead to the disappearance of the species from Earth forever.
