What is the loop in the film path and why is it essential?

The loop in the film path is to allow the necessary slack so that the film can advance, stop, be pulled from the bottom as it is pushed from the top and continue 24 times every second. If the loops are too small, the film will jam and if the loops are too large, the emulsion will scratch as it is moved along the path from the feed to the take up slide.
