It sounds like a joke, it is sometimes believed that this event is actually why famous magician Harry Houdini died on Halloween in 1926

What is being punched repeatedly in the stomach?

After giving a lecture on 10/22/1926, Houdini was resting in his dressing room to nurse his broken ankle when 3 students entered. One asked Houdini “if he believed in the miracles of the Bible” and queried whether he could really withstand any blow to the abdomen, as had been previously proclaimed.
Houdini mused that his stomach could withstand a lot.

Suddenly and forcefully, Whitehead began to punch him hard in the abdomen, delivering ‘hammer-like blows’ upon the magician. Laid back on the sofa with a broken ankle, Houdini was unable to stand and protect himself, and the assault only ceased when he began to gesture that he had had enough, gasping that he had not had time to brace himself

After two days of pain, doctors told him to get immediate surgery to remove his appendix but instead he went on to do a show that night. He collapsed in the middle but managed to finish the performance. In the hospital, he fought back for two weeks before dying on Halloween.
