Is Alcohol the leading preventable cause of death in AMerica?

YES

The CDC: In the United States, excessive alcohol use leads to approximately 178,000 deaths annually, making it a significant public health concern.

COVID in the UK:

In 2023, the UK reported 10,473 alcohol-related deaths, marking an increase from the previous year. This surge is attributed to problematic drinking patterns that intensified during the COVID-19 lockdowns

Mixing alcohol with other depressants is highly dangerous:

Combining alcohol with substances like benzodiazepines or opioids can lead to severe respiratory depression, coma, or death.

This combination is particularly risky because both alcohol and depressants suppress the central nervous system.

Name 4 Depressants

Prescription Depressants

  • Benzodiazepines (anti-anxiety/sleep medications)

    • Examples: Xanax (alprazolam), Valium (diazepam), Ativan (lorazepam), Klonopin (clonazepam)

  • Barbiturates (less common now; used for anxiety, sleep, or seizures)

    • Examples: Phenobarbital, Secobarbital, Pentobarbital

  • Sleep medications (non-benzodiazepine sedatives)

    • Examples: Z-drugs: Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone), Sonata (zaleplon)

Alcohol

  • Ethanol (beer, wine, spirits) — legal depressant often abused, can be lethal in overdose or chronic misuse.

Illegal/Street Depressants

  • GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) – sometimes used recreationally for euphoria, sedative effects, or “club drug” purposes.

  • Rohypnol (flunitrazepam) – powerful benzodiazepine, illegal in many countries, sometimes called a “date-rape drug.”

  • What Narcan is: A medication (naloxone) that quickly reverses opioid overdoses by blocking opioid effects, especially life-threatening respiratory depression.

  • When to use it: If someone shows signs of opioid overdose—unresponsiveness, slow or stopped breathing, blue lips or fingertips, or pinpoint pupils.

Does Cannabis cause long-term damage to the brain and lungs?  If so what?

Lungs:

  • Smoking marijuana clearly damages the human lung, and regular use leads to chronic bronchitis and can cause an immune-compromised person to be more susceptible to lung infections.

Brain:

  • Marijuana causes permanent damage to the Hippocampus leading to symptoms of ADHD (ability to focus), and short-term memory damage.

NOT LONG-TERM Stomach:

  • Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS):This is a rare but serious condition that can develop in people who use cannabis heavily for long periods of time.

  •   CHS is characterized by severe, persistent nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain that can be relieved by hot showers or baths

  • Cannabis use has also been linked to other gastrointestinal issues, such as diarrhea, constipation, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Why has over does on stimulants increased in American?

The combination of stimulants like methamphetamine or cocaine with synthetic opioids, particularly fentanyl, has significantly increased overdose deaths.

In 2022, more than 10% of stimulant overdose deaths also involved fentanyl, underscoring the dangers of polydrug use.

500

What is the difference between Suboxone and Subutex?

Both are partial opioid agonists used in MAT; they are safer than street/prescription drugs and helps prevent relapse.

1️⃣ Subutex

  • Contains: Buprenorphine only.

  • Purpose: Typically used at the very start of treatment for opioid dependence, especially during induction, when someone is coming off full opioid agonists (like fentanyl or oxycodone).

  • Why no naloxone? Because the person is in a controlled medical setting at the start, there’s less concern about misuse in the clinic.

2️⃣ Suboxone

  • Contains: Buprenorphine + naloxone (an opioid antagonist).

  • Purpose: Maintenance treatment for OUD.

  • Role of naloxone: If taken as prescribed sublingually (under the tongue), naloxone is inactive. But if someone tries to inject it, naloxone blocks the opioid effect and can trigger withdrawal. This reduces misuse/diversion risk.

Is cannabis withdrawal common?

In an analysis of studies of more than 23,000 people, researchers found that 47% of people who used marijuana regularly experienced withdrawal symptoms.

Research also shows that the levels of THC in marijuana have been increasing over the past couple of decades. This may make marijuana withdrawal increasingly common.
