Which is faster, P-waves or S-waves?
P-waves.
100
Two plates move towards each other
What is a convergent boundary?
100
Which layer of Earth's interior is located between the outercore and the asthenosphere?
What is the Stiffer Mantle or mesosphere?
100
These 2 layers of Earth create the Lithosphere
What is the Crust and Upper mantle (Rigid Mantle)?
100
The formula for Density
What is mass/volume?
200
Which type of wave will be stopped by the Earth's liquid outer core?
S-waves, because they cannot go through liquid, but P-waves can.
200
One plate slides beneath another
What is subduction?
200
Identify the pressure within Earth's Inner Core
What is 3 million+ atmospheres (atm)?
200
When two plates slide across each other, like at the San Andreas fault
What is a transform boundary?
200
If an oceanic plate meets a continental plate, what will happen?
The more dense oceanic plate will sink (subduction)
300
What are 3 differences between P-waves and S-waves?
P-waves are push-and-pull, faster, and pass through any material. S-waves are slower, move side to side, and can only go through solids
300
Chains of underwater volcanoes
What are mid-ocean ridges?
300
This layer of Earth's interior is in the liquid phase
What is the Outer Core?
300
When two plates slide apart
What is Divergent plate boundary?
300
The reason oil floats on water and the grape floats on corn syrup
What is less dense (lower density)?
400
What is the difference between a seismograph and a seismogram?
A seismograph is the intrument used to study seismic waves. A seismogram is the record/graph of seismic activity.
400
A plate boundary region of Divergence in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean
What is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge?
400
Starting from Earth's surface: Name the layers of the Earth arranged in order of increasing average density
What is Continental crust, Ocean crust then the Mantle?
400
The location where most all earthquakes, volcanoes and mountain ranges occur on Earth
What are plate boundaries?
400
The reason for Convection within Earth's Interior
What are differences in Density and temperature?
500
Explain how seismic waves tell us about the Earth's interior.
S-waves can only go through solids, so the fact that there are no S-waves observed on the opposite side of the Earth tells us that there must be a liquid core. Bonus: The fact that P-waves speed up through the Earth's center means that the inner core is solid. Bonus: The Moho is the line where the density of the lithosphere increases, at the boundary between the crust and mantle.
500
The process where plates slide apart on the ocean floor, causing the ocean to get larger over time
What is sea-floor spreading?
500
Layer in which PARTIAL MELTING of rocks occurs
What is the Asthenosphere
500
Identify the reason for Tectonic Plate movements
What is convection currents?
500
The process where hot material floats and cool material sinks is called
What is convection?
